Why We need Holism in Pregnancy Care: A Review
Alternative Therapies, May/June 2007, Vol. 13, No. 3
By Joel M. Evans, MD, FACOG, ABHM

"The world needs holism in pregnancy care. Our mothers’ experience of giving birth, healthcare providers’ accounts of the stresses and challenges of delivering babies, and the latest statistics showing continuously increasing rates of Cesarean section and preterm birth lead to the same conclusion: conventional pregnancy care is not getting the job done. This is a tragic conclusion, as the practice of obstetrics is by its very nature holistic. What could better exemplify caring for the “whole” than caring for 2 patients in 1 body while searching for solutions that balance their occasionally conflicting interests? There is a drastic need for an even broader holistic approach to prenatal care, however—
one where the role of provider (eg, obstetrician, midwife, family practitioner) allows the mother’s body to follow its innate capacity to bring life into the world, interfering only when necessary. What further differentiates the holistic from the conventional approach to pre n atal care is the use of alternative and complementary therapies to prevent and treat the common discomforts and complications of pregnancy in a way that is consistent
with the belief system of the patient."
